1- The First Pizza - When you think of pizza you immediately think of Italy, but the origin of pizza goes back to ancient times. Greeks and Egyptians were cooking a pizza like flatbread and topping it with olive oil and spices way before the “modern pizza” became as we know it. The pizza evolved in Naples Italy when tomato was added to it in the late 18th century.


2 - The most expensive pizza in the world - Costing a whopping $12,000, we have the Louis XIII. The creator behind this pizza is Renato Viola. The dough is made from the most refined flour, and it takes 72 hours to prepare. Some of the ingredients include three types of caviar, lobster from Norway, Cilento, buffalo mozzarella cheese, and grains of pink Australian sea salt from the Murray River. 


3- Norway is the country that eats more pizza than any other in the world. Norwegians consume the most pizza on a per-person ratio. This small nation has a population of about 5.5 million, and they eat about 11 lbs of pizza per person, annually. If you're ever in Norway, you'll notice there are pizza places on almost every corner.


4- The most popular pizza topping is pepperoni - It’s not too hard to figure this one out, but now we have the numbers to prove it! In a poll taken back in January 2016, pepperoni was found to be the most popular topping followed by Sausage at number two.


5- World’s Biggest Pizza - The biggest Pizza in recorded history was prepared by Dovilio Nardi, Andrea Mannocchi, Marco Nardi, Matteo Nardi, and Matteo Giannotti in Rome, Italy, on December 13th of 2012. It had a total surface area of 13,580.28 square feet. 


6- The first American pizza shop was Lombardi’s in New York City - Lombardi’s was the first pizza shop opened in the United States back in 1905. It is still located in Little Italy in Manhattan, today. Even though Lombardi’s was the first, they did close their doors for a short time, making Papa’s Tomato Pies America’s Oldest Continuously Operating Pizzeria.

10- Why do we call it “Pizza”? Its origin is from the Latin pinsere which means "to pound, stamp". The Lombardic word bizzo or Pizzo means "mouthful" (related to the English words "bit" and "bite"), which was brought to Italy in the middle of the 6th century AD by the invading Lombards. The word “Pizza” was first documented around 997 AD in Gaeta, Italy. After that, the name started to spread to different parts of central and southern Italy.
